Description
The text in the cartouche states that Heikuro was a farmer who went fishing in a mountain stream. While there, a giant snake reached out to swallow him, but Heikuro saw the snake’s reflection just in time. He quickly span round, punching the snake to stun it and then seizing its jaws and tearing it apart. Here, Yoshitoshi shows the moment just before Heikuro strikes, with him looking up at a snake that the viewer can only see in the reflection lower left.
