Description
Harunaga (the name in Kabuki plays for the warlord Oda Nobunaga) is shown pointing a page boy toward a tree fern illuminated in the light from a lantern. Nobunaga took the fern from the grounds of Myokokuji and had it replanted in his own garden at Azuchi Castle. One night he was awoken by the phantom voice of an old man saying, ‘I want to go back to Myokokuji’ over and over again. Nobunaga sent the page boy Ranmaru to investigate, and, on being told the voice really was eminating from the tree, was furious. He set three hundred soldiers to destroy the tree, but they were struck down by a mysterious force and began coughing blood. Nobunaga had no choice but to return the tree fern.
