Description
Interior of the Gankiro Teahouse in Yokohama.
This famous building was opened in Yokohama in 1859 ‘For the Amusement of Foreigners’. Other teahouses would open but Gankiro remained the most impressive.
Lavish dises are being brought through on a tray while numerous courtesans are seen with both Chinese and European guests. While the setup seems quite decorous at first glance, the shadows cast by a man dancing with a fan suggest a more raucus atmosphere inside.
