‘The Outlaw Women’s Brigade in Fierce Battle.’ from the series ‘A Chronicle of the Subjugation of Kagoshima in Satsuma.’ This series shows battles from the Satsuma rebellion, an uprising of samurai against the Meiji government. The designs are often sympathetic to the rebels and their ultimately doomed cause. Here, female samurai, wielding the naginata polearm, are shown fighting a losing battle against Imperial troops under falling cherry blossoms.
