Description

Kiyohime became obsessed with a young monk called Anchin, but he would not break his vows for her. When Anchin fled across a river, she followed. Without a boat to cross, she dived into the water, whereupon she began to transform into a serpent and swim across. Here she is shown, soaked and bedraggled, emerging from the river. She does not have the form of a snake, and the clouded moon and falling cherry blossoms give the scene a tragic air.
